Boundaries in Marriage

This book by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend is the first book I read in their series of Boundaries books. I am not sure if I should read the starter book Boundaries first, but “boundary” is the concept that appealed to me in the first place.
<o></o>
Apparently the authors have strong Christian background despite their clinical psychology specialties. I would probably think that they have quoted too many Bible verses in the book makes it unnecessarily too biblical. The writing style is not as lucid as I’d like it to be and repetitive content could be seen. However, there are still some distinctive messages in the book.
<o></o>
The first one is “It takes Two to Make One”. While oneness is most often talked about in romantic love, we are often unaware of the prerequisite that for “two to become one” we must have two at the outset. Oneness requires two complete and mature people and here is where boundary comes into play. A complete person should be able to give and receive love, be independent and self-sufficient, be responsible and self-confident, live out their talents and values honestly, and deal with problems and failures. To achieve these, you need to have a boundary between the two. To the degree that either is less than complete as a person, the oneness will suffer.

(閱讀全文)

Finding Strength in Your Difficult Times

This book by David Viscott is one which I would give 6 stars out of a 5-star rating. I have read it twice, but I am sure I will read it again later in my life. This book is supposed to be read throughout one’s lifetime to shed you new light and strength. <o></o><o></o>

Although there are no explicit Christian elements, I found this book to be highly coherent with Christianity faith. At the end of each passage, there is a little paragraph which is like a poem or a prayer. Viscott’s language is concise and he writes with clarity. As he says in the preface, “it cuts through to the center of each issue and speaks directly to your heart.”<o></o><o></o>

Below I extracted some of the power sentences from the book.
